The house — slipcovers
Bespoke Slipcovers, Made to Measure
La Couverta makes bespoke slipcovers in Hamburg — short or floor-length, in linen, velvet or silk. Every cover is measured on the original chair and fitted as a calico mock-up before the fabric is cut. Lead time is usually six to ten weeks; we work in Hamburg, on Sylt, across northern Germany, in German-speaking Europe and on board.
Shapes
Short, floor-length, couture
The short cover ends at the seat edge and lets the chair keep its drawing. The floor-length cover falls to the floor; a box pleat at the back and corners gives it depth and movement. The couture shape dresses the chair like a garment — shaped back, covered arms, a line that follows the furniture.
Every shape is measured on the original and fitted in calico. Nothing is cut to standard sizes.
Cloth and detail
Fabric, pleat and button placket
We work with Belgian linen in plain weave and half-panama, Venetian velvet, silk and hard-wearing chenille. The details are chosen as carefully as the cloth: a box pleat to let the cover swing, a button placket with hand-worked buttonholes, piping to draw the edge, a monogram where it belongs.
The process
From enquiry to fitting
The order is the same for every commission: enquiry, first conversation, fabric samples in a hand-sewn linen envelope, measuring on site, calico fitting on the original, making in Hamburg, final fitting at your home. Your pattern is kept in our cutting archive, so a second cover in another fabric or for another season can be remade without a new appointment.
Questions and answers
Frequently asked questions
Short or floor-length — which should I choose?
It depends on the room, the floor and the chair itself. Short covers show the legs and suit rooms in motion; floor-length covers turn a set of chairs into one quiet silhouette. At the calico fitting both lengths can be pinned on your chair and judged in your own light.
What is a calico fitting?
Before the ordered fabric is cut, the cover is made up in unbleached cotton and fitted on the original chair. Fit, drape and fastenings are corrected on the spot and transferred to the pattern — the fabric is only cut afterwards.
Can the covers be washed?
Yes. The fabrics we recommend are pre-washed and made for use; most covers can be machine-washed gently and put back on while slightly damp. Care instructions for your fabric are recorded in the textile passport that comes with every piece.
What does a bespoke slipcover cost?
Every piece is priced according to fabric and workmanship. After the first conversation you receive a fixed quote.
