Collectors' pieces
Car Covers and Piano Covers — Made to Measure
La Couverta makes bespoke textile covers and blankets for collectors' pieces in Hamburg: breathable car covers with a soft inner side, grand piano covers, rugs and saddle cloths for the horse, and dog cushions. Every piece is made on the original — with measuring and a toile fitting on the vehicle, the instrument or in the stable. Production usually takes six to ten weeks; we work in Hamburg, across northern Germany and, on request, in the German-speaking region.
The automobile
Car covers made to measure
A collector’s vehicle spends most of its life standing still. What protects it in that time is a cover that fits: laid over mirrors and rear wings, guided along the sill, without tension and without loose parts. We measure the vehicle on the original — in the hall, the garage, the collection.
The inner side we work from soft, undyed cotton molton that does not chafe the paint. The outer side is a breathable fabric that lets condensation escape and keeps dust away. On request the cover carries a discreet monogram — more it does not need.
What holds for the automobile holds for the motorcycle: we make the cover to the measure of the machine — laid over handlebars and exhaust, with a soft inner side at tank and fairing. Measuring is done on the original, in the garage or the collection.
The instrument
The grand piano cover
A grand piano is furniture and instrument at once — and sensitive to both things rooms bring with them: dust and light. The piano cover lies over the body without touching the instrument where it is sensitive: underside and edges are softly padded, the border falls calmly to just past the keyboard.
We make piano covers from heavy velvet, wool plush or molton — measured on the original, with cut-outs for lock and pedal area where the shape demands it. The signature of the atelier is the seam in brass yarn that every cover carries at its edge.
From the same hand come transport and storage covers for art and instruments: the padded slip for the painting on its way to the depot, the cover for the cello, the wrapping for the sculpture between two exhibitions. The equipment of the game we dress as well — the golf bag and club covers made to measure, on request with a monogram or the mark of the club.
The horse
Rugs and saddle cloths, fitted with respect
Textiles for the horse carry load and deserve care: rugs that must sit over the line of the withers, saddle cloths that follow saddle and back, bandage pads and travel boots made from cloth. We make to measure — and repair what has been worn: renew padding, replace fastenings, re-lay hems.
The toile fitting takes place on the original, in the stable, at the pace the animal sets. Respect for the object here means respect for the living creature: a calm manner, no haste, no needless unrest in the stable aisle.
The dog
Dog cushions made to measure
The dog has its place — in the niche under the stairs, in the basket by the fireplace, in the boot on the way to the weekend. We make cushions and pads that fill that place: cut to the centimetre, with a removable cover in a hard-wearing fabric that tolerates claws and washing.
The filling follows the way the dog lies: firm for the large dog, yielding for the older animal. Measurements and cover fabric stay in the pattern archive — the replacement cover next year needs no new appointment. The path from the first meeting to delivery is described on the Process page, the fabrics used on the Materials page.
Questions and answers
Frequently asked questions
What does a bespoke car cover cost?
Every piece is priced according to fabric and workmanship. You receive a fixed quote after the first meeting.
Does a cover not rather harm the paintwork?
Not when material and fit are right. Inside we work with soft, undyed cotton molton that does not chafe the paint, and outside with a breathable fabric that lets condensation escape. The made-to-measure fit prevents the cover from rubbing across the paint in the draught of a hall.
Do you make piano covers for every model?
Yes. We measure the instrument on the original — grand and concert grand, Bösendorfer shape or historic instrument. Measurements of models we have already measured lie in the pattern archive and make reordering easier.
Do you come to the stable for the toile fitting?
Yes. Rugs and saddle cloths are fitted on the original — calmly, in agreement with you and the yard, and at the pace the animal sets. We also take on repairs and the renewal of padding and fastenings.
How breathable is the car cover?
The fabrics used let air and moisture circulate so that no condensation stands beneath the cover. For halls with fluctuating humidity we recommend a double-layered construction; the right choice we discuss at the measuring on the vehicle.
