On board — yachts
Textiles on Board, Made to Measure
La Couverta makes bespoke textiles for yachts: berth linen, salon cushions, deck upholstery and table linen for the mess — sewn by hand in Hamburg and fitted on board. On request we work with fabrics and fillings certified to the IMO FTP Code and record the certificates in a textile passport for the ship. Lead time is usually six to ten weeks; we measure on board, at the yard or at the berth.
Berth linen
No right angles on board
A berth follows the hull: tapering towards the bow, angled to the bulkhead, corners cut away for pipes and panelling. Standard bed linen pulls, bags or simply does not fit. We measure every berth on board and make sheets with elasticated or zipped solutions, mattress covers and blankets cut exactly to the angles of the ship.
The patterns stay in our cutting archive. Replacement linen for the next season can be remade without another visit on board.
Salon and deck
Cushions and deck upholstery
In the salon we work with wool-rich weaves, naturally slow to ignite, and removable covers throughout. On deck, open constructions and quick-drying fillings let water run through instead of holding it; seams and piping are made to shed salt and sun.
Fitting-out and true upholstery work — rebuilding seat boxes, for example — is carried out together with our partner workshops, at the yard or at the berth.
The textile passport
An inventory for the ship
Every piece we deliver is recorded in a textile passport: fabric, origin, measurements, care, tested values such as Martindale and lightfastness, and IMO FTP Code certificates where required. For the crew it is a working manual; for the management, a documented inventory of everything textile on board.
Certificates and scope
Fire safety, fenders and the beach club
Fire safety on board follows the IMO FTP Code in its parts: Part 7 covers curtains and vertically hanging textiles, Part 8 upholstered furniture and covers, Part 9 bedding and mattresses. We carry fabrics certified to these procedures — among them the inherently flame-retardant Trevira CS, whose resistance lies in the fibre itself and survives every wash — and for vessels under the British flag we choose treated fabrics in line with MGN 580, delivering the test certificates with the ship. On deck we make fender covers in sets, embroidered with the yacht’s name, and the textiles of the beach club and the aft deck: lounger pads made to the furniture, beach towels bearing the ship’s mark, outdoor curtains that turn the platform into a sheltered veranda. We work for owners of yachts between ten and twenty-five metres, for charter fleets with recurring sets, for superyachts — there usually through the refit yard — and for houseboats in Hamburg. Two honest boundaries belong to this: tender covers and canopies are made by a sailmaker from our circle of partners, and crew uniforms we do not make. Everything sewn by the atelier — berth linen, cushions, table linen, curtains — comes from our own workshop. For motorhomes and camper vans on land, the same method applies: textiles for the road.
Questions and answers
Frequently asked questions
Do you make bed linen for berths?
Yes. Berths follow the line of the hull and are rarely rectangular, so every berth is measured on board. We cut fitted sheets, mattress covers, duvets and berth upholstery precisely to these shapes and keep the patterns in our archive for easy reorders.
What does the IMO FTP Code mean for textiles?
The IMO FTP Code is the fire-safety code of the International Maritime Organization and defines how materials on seagoing vessels are tested, including the flammability of textiles. Where required, we work with fabrics and fillings that carry an IMO FTP Code certificate and file the certificates with the ship's textile passport.
Which fabrics stand up to life at sea?
Salt air, humidity and unfiltered sunlight are hard on cloth. We choose fabrics with tested lightfastness, quick-drying fillings for deck upholstery and wool-rich weaves for the salon. All covers are removable so they can be cleaned ashore and stored over winter.
What does work on board cost?
Every commission is priced according to fabric and workmanship. After the first conversation you receive a fixed quote.
