The house — bed canopies

Bed Canopies Made to Measure

La Couverta sews bespoke bed canopies in Hamburg — for four-poster beds, canopy frames and beds that are yet to receive a canopy. We work with Belgian linen, silk and voile and measure every bed on site. Lead time is usually six to ten weeks; we work for bedrooms in Hamburg, on Sylt, across northern Germany and, on request, throughout the German-speaking region.

The bedroom

A room within a room

A bed canopy frames the bed and calms the room. It filters the morning light, softens the acoustics and gives the sleeping place a boundary without closing it off.

This effect does not come from quantity but from measure: the height of the attachment point, the fullness of the fabric, the question of whether the panels brush the floor or float above it. We decide all of this on the original, not at the drawing board.

What exactly is meant by a bed canopy is explained in our glossary. The pattern book shows the basic form as a drawing:

Choosing the fabric

Linen, silk, voile

Belgian linen is the quietest of the three fabrics: full-bodied, matt, gently creasing. It darkens softly and can be washed — our first choice for canopies that live with everyday life.

Silk falls heavy and smooth and gives the bed a ceremonial finish. It is sensitive to light and calls for specialist cleaning; we say so openly before you decide.

Voile is translucent and the lightest solution: the canopy floats, the room stays bright, and the gaze from outside stays away.

Construction

On the four-poster and without a frame

On a classic four-poster bed we hang the panels from the existing frame and sew the allowance so that fabric measure and frame measure come together without strain.

For beds without a frame we make the canopy for a ceiling suspension or for a plain canopy frame built to measure. The fittings are installed together with our partner workshops; fabric, cut and seams come from our atelier.

Every canopy can be taken down without tools — for washing, for moving house, for the summer.

On site

Measuring and process

We measure every bed in person: the height of the room, the position of the bed, the run of sloping ceilings. Our glossary explains the term measuring.

The full path from the first meeting through the toile fitting to the final fitting on site is described on the Process page.

Questions and answers

Frequently asked questions

How is the bed canopy attached?

On a four-poster bed the fabric hangs from the existing frame. For beds without a frame we make the canopy for a ceiling suspension or a plain canopy frame; the fittings are installed together with our partner workshops.

Can a bed canopy be washed?

Linen and most voile weaves can be taken down and washed. Silk is better entrusted to a specialist cleaner. We sew every canopy so that it can be removed and rehung without tools.

What does a bespoke bed canopy cost?

Every piece is priced according to fabric and workmanship. You receive a fixed quote after the first meeting.

How long does it take to make?

After the measuring visit and your choice of fabric, the lead time is usually six to ten weeks. The exact date is stated in your quote.

Do you also make canopies for children's rooms?

Yes. For children's rooms we recommend washable linen or a tightly woven cotton voile, and a fixing that withstands a pull and comes away without a trace when the bed moves on.
