The light

Bespoke textile work for Nice — fabrics for the special light

La Couverta makes bespoke textile couture for apartments and houses in Nice — from the Promenade des Anglais to Cimiez and Mont Boron. The special light of the city makes its own demands: we work with lightfast weaves and pale Belgian linen for bright rooms. Measuring, toile fitting and final fitting take place on site; lead time is usually six to ten weeks.

The light

Nice measures fabrics against the sun

The light in Nice is not a cliché but a measured quantity. Painters came because of it, and anyone who lives here knows the hours when the sun falls deep into the rooms. For textiles that means: whatever hangs and lies on the coast must be lightfast.

Lightfastness is a tested value — the resistance of a colour to UV radiation, measured on the scale up to eight. We carry weaves with high values and choose deliberately for southern exposures: pale linens, piece-dyed fabrics, tones that do not fade but ripen. The details are on the page Materials.

The difference shows after years: a cheaply dyed panel loses its colour first at the window edge; a good weave ages evenly and with dignity. At the fabric selection we are glad to show samples that have been lying in the light for years — it is easier to explain on the material itself than with numbers and scales.

The apartments

Belle Époque, tall windows, bright rooms

The apartments on the Promenade des Anglais and in Cimiez have dimensions from another era: windows over three metres, double-casement, with deep reveals and a view of the sea. For these we make bespoke curtains that take the height seriously — from the crown to the floor, on request double-layered: a light sheer for the day, a dense panel for the midday hour.

For the furniture the reverse of Hamburg applies: here it is not dark velvet that is needed but slipcovers in pale, washed linen — fabrics that take up the light instead of swallowing it. Plus bespoke cushions and upholstery in the tones of the city: ivory, flax, a grey like the sea in winter.

The loggias and glazed balconies of the old houses are rooms of their own too: half inside, half outside, closer to the weather than the apartment. For them we make pads and cushions from weatherproof weaves that still look like an interior — without the sheen and rustle one expects from outdoor fabrics. The fillings dry quickly after the summer rain; the covers are removable and washable.

The work

Measured in Nice, sewn in Hamburg

The process does not differ from the one in Hamburg: measuring at the original, toile fitting with pins, production in the atelier, final fitting with steam and Textile Passport. We are on the coast several times a year and bundle the appointments — from Menton to Saint-Tropez.

What Nice adds: an eye on the season. Many apartments are lived in only part of the time; we plan final fittings so that they lie before the arrival, and recommend covers that can be taken off or protected during absences. The Textile Passport records what is to be done after months of rest.

The coast

From Nice in both directions

Nice lies in the middle of the coast: to the east Monaco and Menton, to the west Antibes, Cannes and Saint-Tropez. Anyone who works with us in Nice works with an atelier that travels this stretch regularly — you will find the overview of the region on the page Côte d’Azur.

Questions and answers

Frequently asked questions

Which fabrics stand up to the light in Nice?

The decisive factor is lightfastness — the resistance of a colour to UV radiation, measured on a scale up to eight. We carry weaves with high lightfastness values and recommend for rooms with southern exposure pale linens and piece-dyed fabrics that do not fade.

Do you make for Belle Époque apartments with tall windows?

Yes. The apartments on the Promenade and in the side streets often have windows over three metres, plus parquet, stucco and double doors. We measure at the window and make curtains that follow the height — double-layered when midday sun and evening light need different answers.

How often are you in Nice?

We are on the Côte d’Azur several times a year and bundle the appointments along the coast — from Menton to Saint-Tropez. Measuring, toile fitting and final fitting take place in your apartment; everything is made in the Hamburg atelier.

Is linen suitable for the climate on the coast?

Yes, especially there. Belgian linen is cool in the hand, takes up moisture and releases it again — in warm summers the most pleasant upholstery fabric we know. For terraces and loggias we work with weatherproof weaves.

Do you also look after apartments that are only lived in seasonally?

Yes, that is frequent in Nice. We then recommend washable covers that can be taken off or protected during absences, and we document everything in the Textile Passport — so that after months it is clear how each piece is cared for.
