La Rive

Bespoke textile work for Geneva — at home on the international lake

La Couverta makes bespoke textile couture for houses in Geneva — in Cologny, Vandœuvres and along the right bank of the lake. The atelier's name is French; the work follows Hamburg bespoke tailoring: measuring at the original, toile fitting, final fitting on site. We work in German and French; lead time is usually six to ten weeks.

La Rive

A Hamburg atelier with a French soul

Geneva is the city where our name is at home. La Couverta — derived from the Couvert, the place setting at the table and the envelope for the letter. Our fabric samples travel in Le Couvert, a hand-sewn linen folder, and when we work in Geneva it feels less like a journey abroad than like a return.

For houses in Cologny, Vandœuvres and on the Quai we make bespoke slipcovers, table linen with monogram and curtains for tall windows. Everything is made in Hamburg — measuring and the final fitting happen on Lake Geneva.

The city itself sets the tone: international, multilingual, discreet. Households move between languages, staff come from several countries, and the interior should be right in each of these worlds. Our answer is the quiet form: classic cuts, weaves with a known origin, details seen only at the second glance — a button placket worked by hand, a drawn-thread hem, a monogram that does not call out.

The houses

An international lake, international households

Geneva households are rarely rooted in one place. Many of our clients live between cities — Geneva and London, Geneva and New York, Geneva and the Côte d’Azur. For such households the pattern archive is more than a convenience: measured once, sets for every further residence are made to the same measurements, in the same signature.

What distinguishes the houses by the lake is a quiet generosity: long tables, tall windows, furniture with provenance. Classic forms suit this — the floor-length slipcover with inverted pleat, the linen cloth with drawn-thread hem, the monogram in hand embroidery from St. Gallen.

The apartments in the city have their own rhythm too — in old Geneva, on the Rive Gauche: parquet, stucco, narrow staircases where a measuring done with experience goes faster than one done with devices. We bring everything we need and leave the apartment as we found it.

The way of working

Deux langues, une main — two languages, one hand

We work in German and French — the first conversation, the written coordination and the Textile Passport that accompanies every piece. The process stays the same as everywhere: measuring at the original, toile fitting with pins, production in the atelier, final fitting with steam and a personal handover.

In between there is no anonymity: you always speak with the same person. The page Process describes the full way; the weaves with origin and care are on the page Materials.

The neighbourhood

From Lake Geneva into the world

From Geneva the ways are short: to Zurich and Lake Zurich, into the Alps — and down the Autoroute du Soleil to the Mediterranean, to Nice and Monaco. Anyone who works with us in Geneva works with an atelier that travels these ways regularly.

And because Geneva is a city of organisations and receptions: for celebrations and official occasions too we make table linen and rows of chairs — from the private dîner to the table that is meant to represent a house. The patterns stay in the archive; for every further occasion the linen comes from the same hand — in the same quality, to the same measurements.

Questions and answers

Frequently asked questions

Do you work in French?

Yes. The first conversation, the coordination and the Textile Passport are possible in French or German — as suits your house. The name La Couverta is French anyway; the language of the house always has been.

How often are you in Geneva?

We travel to Lake Geneva several times a year and align the appointments with our commissions in the region. Measuring, toile fitting and final fitting take place in your house; between journeys we coordinate everything in writing.

Do you make for historic houses and period buildings?

Yes, with respect for the existing fabric. We adapt slipcovers and curtains to furniture and windows as they are — without intervention in the substance. For tall windows and long enfilades we work with classic forms: inverted pleat, drawn-thread hem, restrained ribbons.

Can you look after international households with several residences?

Yes, that is often the case in Geneva. Patterns and fabrics lie in the archive; sets for further residences — in Zurich, on the Côte d’Azur or elsewhere — are made to the same measurements and by the same hand.

How does delivery to Switzerland work?

We take care of delivery and customs clearance. The final fitting on site is done in person — no parcel, no freight carrier. Nothing about the process changes for you.
