The country houses

Bespoke slipcovers and table linen for Munich and the lakes

La Couverta works for houses in Munich — Grunwald, Bogenhausen, Herzogpark — and for the country houses on Lake Starnberg and Tegernsee. Everything is sewn in the Hamburg atelier; measuring, toile fitting and final fitting take place on site. Classic fabrics, quiet forms, table linen for large gatherings — lead time is usually six to ten weeks.

The country houses

Between town and lake

Munich has two sides, and both work with textiles: the townhouses in Bogenhausen and Herzogpark with their representative floors — and the country houses in Grunwald, on Lake Starnberg and on Tegernsee, where life circles around the table and the hearth.

We make for both: bespoke slipcovers for the row of chairs in the dining room, covers for sofa and armchair in the living room, and table linen for the gatherings that have tradition in this region. Everything is sewn in Hamburg — measuring, fitting and the final fitting on site happen at your place, in town as by the lake.

The country houses by the lakes make their own demands: they are often lived in all year, now as a summer house, now as a retreat in winter. For these we recommend two sets — light linen for the bright season, a heavier weave for the months when the hearth counts. Both are made from the same pattern; the change is drawing on and off.

The table

Tegernsee and the art of inviting

Nowhere in the German-speaking world is inviting taken so much for granted as between Munich and the lakes. The tables are long, the gatherings large, and the linen has work to do: a set of cloths for twelve, plus runners, napkins and the row of chairs.

For this we work with Belgian linen — woven for generations, washable, with a fall that cannot be ironed but has to be created. The monogram comes from St. Gallen, embroidered by hand; the drawn-thread hem is pulled, not printed. What has proven itself is filed in the pattern archive: the second set for the house by the lake needs no new appointment.

The fabrics

Classic does not mean arbitrary

The region has a tone of its own: lighter than Hamburg, warmer than Zurich. It suits weaves with substance — linen in flax and ivory, wool blends for the cool months, cashmere for the throw on the wing chair. In winter dark velvet carries the long evenings; in summer the linen stays cool.

You will find all weaves with origin, binding and care on the page Materials. The choice is made in your home, with the samples from the Couvert — in the light of the room, not under atelier lighting.

The process

One point of contact, from measuring to final fitting

The way is the same everywhere: first conversation, measuring at the original, toile fitting, production in the atelier, final fitting on site with steam and Textile Passport. What has proven itself in Munich: we bundle appointments in the region, so that a measuring on the Isar and a final fitting on Tegernsee can lie in one journey. The page Process describes the full way. And anyone with a second residence in Vienna or by the Mediterranean continues working with the same patterns.

A practical note: the distances between the lakes are short, but crowded in summer. We like to plan appointments in the region for the off-season — measuring and toile fitting then run without time pressure, and the final fitting lies before the first big weekend of the year. Reorders run through the pattern archive without any further measuring — even years later — the pattern lies as long as the furniture stands.

Questions and answers

Frequently asked questions

Do you come to Munich and the lakes for the measuring?

Yes. We are regularly in Munich and on Lake Starnberg and Tegernsee. Measuring and toile fitting take place in your house — in town as in the country. The final fitting on site is done in person, not by freight carrier.

Which fabrics suit country houses by the lakes?

Heavy linen, wool-linen blends and, for winter, dark velvet have proven themselves. For houses lived in all year we recommend washable loose covers; for the summer season, light washed linen.

Do you make table linen for large tables?

Yes, it is one of the most frequent commissions in the region: cloths for tables of ten and more, runners with drawn-thread hem, napkins with monogram. The cloth is measured at the table — overhang and fall are set at the original.

Do you work with our interior designer or architect?

With pleasure. We supply patterns, fabric cards and samples and coordinate the textile layer directly with the studio — via the page for designers or in a joint appointment on site.

Can heirlooms be newly fitted out without being altered?

Yes. The loose cover is made precisely for that: it is drawn over the furniture without any sewing or gluing on the original. The piece remains untouched, and the pattern lies in the archive.
